Ricky Powell – New York Portraits
E’ difficile capire per quali ragioni a New York basta uscire di casa con una macchina fotografica, per riuscire a realizzare degli scatti destinati a diventare delle icone del proprio tempo. Nella capitale mondiale della street photography, accanto a nomi celebri come Bruce Davidson, Martha Cooper, Jamel Shabazz o Brian Nobili, le fotografie di Ricky Powell sono riconoscibili per quella carica di energia e per dell’imprevedibilità che accompagnano da sempre colui che è conosciuto con il soprannome di The Lazy Hustler (Il pigro baro). Quel che più identifica il suo lavoro, tuttavia, è l’aver seguito senza distinzioni di sorta sia gli artisti – Warhol, Basquiat, Rammellzee, Haring, Dondi White – che i musicisti – Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy -, senza per questo dimenticare che il vero palco a New York sono i marciapiedi dove la gente comune crea lo stile di domani.

It is difficult to understand why in New York you can simply leave home with a camera and being able to create shots fated to become icons of their own time. In the world capital of street photography, alongside famous names such as Bruce Davidson, Martha Cooper, Jamel Shabazz or Brian Nobili, the photographs of Ricky Powell are recognizable for the boost of energy and for the unpredictability that always accompany this man who is also known with the nickname of The Lazy Hustler. What most identifies his work, however, is having followed without distinction both visual artists – Warhol, Basquiat, Rammellzee, Haring, Dondi White – and musicians – Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy – without forgetting that the real stage in New York is the sidewalks, where ordinary people create the style of tomorrow.
